I love Amish fiction! There is just something so captivating about the simplicity and wholesomeness of the Amish people and their beliefs and culture. It makes me yearn for a simpler life. Okay, not that much simpler, I do enjoy electricity and technology, but a somewhat simpler life. For example, these books put a big emphasis on food, so I bought a bread machine to make homemade bread. I know that's cheating, but it still gave me the desired effect of fresh homemade bread that I technically made. So yummy when it's hot with butter on it. I even briefly entertained the idea of purchasing some chickens for fresh eggs, but decided that might be a bit more work than I truly have time for. After all, I do have to work to pay my bills and my one acre lot surely isn't big enough to be converted to a farm; though, I did plant a small garden and some fruit trees. Anyway, back to my fascination with the Amish. Aside from food, I enjoy reading about the courting rituals and community closeness, the minuscule things that I take for granted daily, and the obscure outlook of the Amish on those of us who are "fancy".
And I have to admit that I became enchanted by these people by pure accident. I just happened to pick up a cheap novel from the bargain bin at my local book store. The cover caught my eye and since it was a deal I added it to my purchases. I read it and realized it was book one of a trilogy. I was so ensnared that I had to have book two. I went back to my usual book store and they didn't have it. I checked the other book stores in town. No one had it. I did find book three so I went ahead and bought it. I decided to order book two online and then changed my mind. I couldn't wait days for this book to be delivered, so I ended up scouring the local libraries and finally found book two. And so, this is how my interest in Amish fiction began. Oh, in case you were wondering what book one was, it was
The Shunning, Heritage of Lancaster County Series #1 by Beverly Lewis. Apparently, I'm not the only person who was obsessed with the novel, because the Hallmark channel recently made a movie based off of the book.
So, I encourage you. If you have never sampled Amish fiction give it a try. A couple of authors I recommend are Beverly Lewis (who is the Queen of Amish fiction in my opinion), Wanda Brunstetter, and Marta Perry.
Veel leesplezier!
